CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team ended the Klegerg Bank College Classic with a huge, 10-8, victory over the University of Houston on Sunday.
Joe Jimenez had himself a day, launching two game-turning home runs while adding four RBI's and two runs scored. Daniel Calabrese and Jimmy De Leon each recorded another home run for the Cardinals to total four on the day. Wilson Ehrhardt and Rey Mendoza finished with two hits and one RBI on the afternoon.
Houston got the scoring started in the bottom of the second, driving in two runs to take an early 2-0 lead.
Jimenez got the Cardinals on the board in the top of the third with a two-run homer to tie the game up at 2-2. Houston later responded in the bottom of the inning with two runs to retake the lead at 4-2.
After a scoreless fourth, the Cardinals went on to score runs in each of the final five innings. In the fifth, Ehrhardt drove in a run on an RBI single to bring the score to 4-3. Later in the inning, Houston drove in four runs to extend its lead to 8-3.
In the sixth, Jimmy De Leon smacked a three-run homer over the left-field wall to pull UIW within two runs. Later, Jimenez hit his second homer of the game to bring the score to 8-7.
Daniel Calabrese tied the game up in the seventh with a solo homer over the left-field wall, bringing the score to 8-8.
In the eighth, Jimenez smacked his third extra-base hit of the game on an RBI double to left field to give the Cardinals their first lead of the game.
In the ninth, Mendoza drove in an insurance run on a sacrifice fly to extend the Cardinals' lead to 10-8.
