Corpus Christi, Texas – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team defeated Texas A&M - Corpus Christi (TAMUCC) 10-4 in the Kleberg Bank College Classic at Whataburger Field. The Cardinals' offense led the way putting up ten runs on 13 hits in the win.
Wilson Ehrhardt, Jimmy De Leon, Hernan Yanez, and Tony DeJesus totaled two hits each. Daniel Calabrese led the team in RBI's with three, while Kayden Cassidy earned the win on the mound for the Cardinals.
UIW got the scoring started early, capitalizing on the Islanders mistakes. Alec Carr and Rey Mendoza each reached on a fielder's choice then advanced to second and third on a wild pitch. Yanez then smacked a two-run single to put the Cardinals up 2-0.
In the second inning, a wild pitch from the Islanders' starter allowed the Cardinals to extend their lead to 3-0 heading into the bottom of the inning where the Islanders got on the board, putting up two runs to cut the lead to 3-2.
The Cardinals put up five runs to extend their lead to 8-2 in the fourth inning. Calabrese sent a two-run home run over the left field wall while later in the inning, Ehrhardt singled, Carr tripled, and Mendoza grounded out to send three across the plate.
In the seventh, the Islanders added a run on a fielder's choice bringing the score to 8-3.
UIW closed out the game with DeJesus and Calabrese each picking up one RBI to give the Cardinals a 10-3 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth. The Islanders would add one run on a fielder's choice bringing the final score to 10-4.
Cassidy earned his first win of the season, pitching 5.2 innings, allowing two earned runs on five hits while striking out four.
