SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team opens its season against Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Feb. 17-19 at Sullivan Field, sponsored by H-E-B. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, then 12 p.m. on Sunday.

• Alec Carr was named to the 2023 Southland Conference Baseball Preseason All-Conference first team.
• The Cardinals return key players in Carr, Jimmy De Leon, Hernan Yanez, and Wilson Ehrhardt while Carson Rollins, Larry Westall, Kayden Cassidy, Isaiah Zavala and Steve Hayward return to the mound this season.
• Head coach Ryan Shotzberger added 25 new faces to the team in five freshmen and 20 transfer student-athletes.
• Last season, the Cardinals went 16-8 at home and 21-31 overall.

 
SCOUTING THE COUGARS

• Senior designated hitter Brady Bunten, junior outfielder Brennan Orf and junior third baseman Josh Ohl were named to Preseason All-OVC Team.
• Orf led the Cougars last season, hitting .357 while totaling 13 home runs. He led the league with a .492 on-base percentage.
• The OVC predicted the Cougars to finish in sixth place in the preseason poll after finishing last season 27-28.
