PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – The dynamic duo of
Lindsey Scott Jr. and
Darion Chafin got the University of the Incarnate Word football team rolling on Saturday night. Chafin scored the first touchdown five minutes into the game as the Cardinals defeated Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU), 31-14, on Saturday night at Panther Stadium.
The Cardinal defense held PVAMU under 100 total yards of offense through the first three quarters. Scott finished the game 30-41 off 228 yards and three touchdowns.
Isaiah Robinson (90) and
Jarrell Wiley (92) combined for 182 rushing yards.
Kelechi Anyalebechi inched closer to the career tackle record with five total tackles on the night.
The Panthers answered, rushing into the end zone midway through the first, taking their first lead of the game (7-6).
Scott found
Taylor Grimes at the end of the first quarter for another Cardinal touchdown, then converted the two-point play to
Brandon Porter, giving UIW a seven-point lead (14-7).
Less than a minute into the second quarter,
Marquez Perez caught an 18-yard pass from Scott and brought it home (20-7).
UIW's punt was blocked and recovered at the 20-yard line, but the Cardinal defense stood strong, forcing the Panthers into a 32-yard field goal that missed wide left. Robinson then rushed four yards for a touchdown and Grimes capped off the drive with a two-point conversion (28-7).
Tony Sterner completed a 35-yard field goal at the end of third, extending UIW's lead to 31-7.
In the fourth, the Panthers pounded it in from the one-yard line, but UIW secured the 31-14 victory.
With this 3-0 start, head coach
G.J. Kinne holds the record for the best start as a first-year head coach. The Cardinals look to carry this impressive start into Southland Conference play next week.
