Baseball Flies Past TAMUCC

SAN ANTONIO – All nine Cardinals registered a hit in the University of the Incarnate Word's 13-3 victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (TAMUCC) in the series opener on Thursday night at Sullivan Field, sponsored by H-E-B.

Michael Garza pitched six innings for the Cardinals while striking out seven batters. Jimmy De Leon went 3-for-4 on the night and Roberto Gonzalez finished with three RBIs.

Gonzalez got the Cardinals started with a two-RBI triple in the first inning (2-0).

In the second, the Islanders cut UIW's edge to 2-1 off an RBI single through the right side, but UIW extended its lead to 5-1 in the bottom of the inning. De Leon singled to center field before Reid Hensley doubled to bring home De Leon. Ridge Rogers then launched a two-RBI homer to right field to give the Cardinals a four-run cushion.

An Islander stole home in the top of the third, but a sacrifice fly from Wilson Ehrhardt in the fourth plated Alec Carr as the Cardinals responded (6-2). UIW tacked on another run with an RBI single from Hernan Yanez to bring the score to 7-2.

TAMUCC registered an RBI single in the fifth, but once more UIW had an answer in the sixth. Ehrhardt hit the ball off the left center wall to bring in Carr before Gonzalez doubled next at bat as Ehrhardt crossed home (9-3). Yanez followed suite, completing three consecutive RBI hits for the Cardinals (10-3). UIW batted around as Yanez scored next off a sacrifice fly from Hensley (11-3).

In the bottom of the seventh, Smith reached home on a wild pitch. Rogers then scored on an error to end the game by run rule in the eighth inning.
