Baseball Cruises Past Demons

SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team scored eight runs in the first four innings to defeat Northwestern State University (NSU), 8-2, on Friday night at Sullivan Field, sponsored by H-E-B.

The UIW pitching staff held the Demons to just six hits, while two Cardinals – Taylor Darden and Alec Carr – had three hits apiece.

Carson Rollins set the tone, pitching three up, three down in the bottom of the first. Hernan Yanez then got the Cardinals' offense rolling with an RBI triple. In the second inning, Jimmy De Leon dropped the ball between first and right field to bring in another run as UIW closed out the second frame with a 3-0 lead.

The Cardinals' bats heated up in the third with a two-RBI double down the right field line from Ridge Rogers (5-0). Carr brought Rogers home and then stole second base. De Leon singled as Carr scored to give UIW a 7-0 cushion.

NSU lined out a solo homer in the top of the fourth (7-1), but Yanez struck again in the bottom of the inning, using a double to bring Grant Smith across home plate (8-1).

The Demons tacked on a run in the top of the seventh to cut the lead to 8-2, but UIW ultimately won.
