SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team scored seven unanswered runs against Southeastern Louisiana University (SLU), coming back from a five-run deficit to win, 8-6, on Friday night at Sullivan Field, sponsored by H-E-B.
All nine of the Cardinals' starting lineup recorded a hit on the night.
Roberto Gonzalez led the offense with three hits, while
Wilson Ehrhardt,
Grant Smith and
Alec Carr each notched two RBIs.
Smith was walked in the second frame and advanced to second on a fly out.
Nixon Brannan then singled to left center, while Carr reached first on a fielder's choice as Smith came home (1-0).
A leadoff Lion triple followed by an RBI single tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the third.
Hernan Yanez threw out the runner attempting to steal second base, then
Michael Garza struck out the next two batters for three quick outs.
An RBI double in the top of the fourth gave SLU a 2-1 lead. The Lions tacked on four more runs through the fifth and sixth inning (6-1).
Carr smacked a solo home run out of the park in the bottom of the sixth and Ehrhardt hit a two-RBI homer to cut the lead to 6-4 in the seventh frame. Gonzalez tripled down the right field line before a groundout from Smith brought him home (6-5).
Ridge Rogers' hit bounced off the wall for a triple in the top of the eighth. With bases loaded,
Taylor Darden drove in Rogers to level the game, 6-6. Gonzalez singled to right field and the Cardinals regained the lead (7-6). Smith dropped the ball in shallow right field as UIW took an 8-6 cushion.
With two outs, the Lions hit a deep triple to center field, but
Chandler David stuck out the final batter to clinch the 8-6 victory.
