LYNCHBURG, Va. – The University of the Incarnate Word men's swimming and diving team was crowned the 2022 Coastal Collegiate Sports Association (CCSA) Conference Champions on Saturday after finishing with 1,046 points. This was the Cardinals' fifth conference title in program history and the fourth in the last five years. UIW was unable to travel to the 2021 conference championship due to inclement weather in South Texas.
Kaivon Dixon was named Most Outstanding Diver of the Championship after winning the 1-meter and 3-meter dives. Head coach
Phillip Davis won the Swimming Coach of the Meet award while
Tommy Law earned the Diving Coach of the Meet honor.
Throughout the four-day event, the Cardinals won 22 events, finished second in 17 events and placed third in 16 events, competing against the other four of the top five teams in the league – Florida Atlantic University (FAU), Gardner-Webb, Old Dominion and Bellarmine.
UIW won in ten different events on the final day of the CCSA Championship. In the 1,650-yard freestyle,
Sergio Duran Mata crossed the finish line with a final time of 15:27.65 to place first.
Fernando Ruvalcaba Cruz took home the 100 and 200-yard backstroke titles.
Spyridon Kranias won the 100-yard breaststroke event (54.19) and
Panagiotis Vlachogiannakos placed first in the 400-yard individual medley.
Fabio Fasolo took home the 200-yard freestyle title.
The team placed first in the 800-yard freestyle relay and the 400-yard medley relay.
Next up, the Cardinals will travel to Atlanta, Georgia for the NCAA Nationals, March 23-26.
