THIBODAUX, La. – The University of the Incarnate Word football team defeated Nicholls State University 49-14 in a non-conference matchup Saturday night at John L. Guidry Stadium.
Against his alma mater,
Lindsey Scott Jr. finished with five touchdowns and 327 passing yards.
Marcus Cooper and
Taylor Grimes had two TDs each.
Ricky Rich totaled six tackles, while
Kelechi Anyalebechi and Tah MacBright had five apiece.
Brian Mayes finished with three pass breakups and
Steven Parker notched one sack.
Nicholls had the chance to strike first, but UIW's defense stood strong, and the Colonels missed a 35-yard field goal five minutes into the game.
Scott completed three passing TDs to three different Cardinals in the first half. He found
CJ Hardy on a 30-yard pass with eight minutes left in the first quarter to score the first touchdown of the day.
Grimes then toed the line off a 4-yard pass from Scott as UIW took a 14-0 lead.
Cooper started the second quarter scoring off a 7-yard pass from Scott before Nicholls had its first TD with six minutes to go in the half (21-7).
Cooper took flight and rolled into the end zone in the second half to pick up his second touchdown of the day and extend the lead to 28-7.
Grimes followed with his second TD, taking the ball 20 yards to the house.
Darion Chafin closed out the third by walking into the end zone for UIW's sixth score of the game (42-7).
The Colonels scored less than a minute into the final quarter, but quarterback Steve Duncan found
Jaelin Campbell midway through the fourth as UIW secured a 49-14 victory.
