SAN ANTONIO -- The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team's season came to a close Saturday afternoon as Lamar claimed a 13-3 win to close out the series at Sullivan Field, sponsored by H-E-B.
Lamar was on the board first as it scored three in the second off a three-run home run. The Cardinals responded with a solo shot to right field by
Ron Brown in the bottom half of the second.
The Cardinals added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning as
Chance Medina started the inning with a single and
Zach Limas cracked a double to centerfield to give the Cardinals life with runners in scoring position before a 70-minute rain delay halted action.
Out of the break,
Trent Koerner hit a sac fly deep enough to score Medina from third and
Landon Etzel drove in Koerner with a grounder to shortstop to cut into the Lamar lead, 8-3.
It was all UIW could get as Lamar put up a run in the sixth inning and four more in the seventh to close out the game.
The Cardinals finished the 2021 season with a 21-28 overall record with a 17-23 mark in league play under second-year head coach,
Ryan Shotzberger, finishing just outside the top eight to qualify for the Southland Conference postseason.
UIW saw
Ryan Flores set a new program record with 91 career double plays turned and
Lee Thomas rise through the top-10 of the program's record book. In his five seasons, Thomas finished with 27 home runs (third), 209 games played, 107 walks and 50 doubles (fourth), 730 at-bats, 362 total bases (fifth), 168 RBIs (sixth) and 217 hits (ninth).
