SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team dropped a pair of Southland Conference games at McNeese on Saturday, April 10, in double-header action at Joe Miller Ballpark.
Michael Garza went the distance in game two, recording eight strikeouts in eight innings of work. Grant Smith's solo home run in the fourth inning of game two tied it, 1-1, before McNeese responded with two runs in the bottom half for a 3-1 lead.
The Cardinals looked to get on the board in the top of the sixth inning with a Taylor Darden two-out double and Ryan Flores walked but a Smith flyout to center field ended the threat.
The Cowboys added another run the bottom of the sixth inning and held on for the 4-1 win.
McNeese (17-14, 11-7 SLC) took game one, 19-1, off 20 hits. The Cowboys came out hot with five runs in the first inning, two in the second, and added nine in the bottom of the third to go up, 16-0.
UIW (12-14, 8-11 SLC) got on the board in the sixth inning to break up the no-hitter as Smith reached on an error by the third baseman and moved to second on a passed ball. Landon Etzel scored Smith with an RBI single to right for the Cardinals' score.

The Cardinals look to prevent a Cowboys' sweep in game four with a 1 p.m. (CT) start on Sunday, April 11, at Joe Miller Ballpark.
