LAKE CHARLES, La. – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team fell to McNeese, 10-4, to close out the four-game set at Joe Miller Ballpark on Sunday, April 11.
Grant Smith again led the Cardinals going 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored accounting for two of the black and red's four runs.
McNeese put up six runs in the bottom of the third inning as Reid Boroque started the frame with a solo home run. Tre Obregon added two more with a two-RBI single to center and Jake Dickerson's three-run home run gave the Cowboys a 6-0 lead.
The Cowboys pushed another run across in the fifth inning before the Cardinals put one on the board in the sixth.
Landon Kimbro opened the inning with a walk and Chance Medina pinch ran to scoot around the bases on a Landon Etzel ground out and a Smith single. Medina scored on a wild pitch as UIW cut into the McNeese lead, 7-1.
The Cowboy responded with three runs in the bottom half of the sixth inning for the 10-1 lead.
UIW looked to mount a comeback in the eighth inning, when Josh Lackner started with a double that landed between the center and right fielder and Smith sent an RBI double to the left side to score Lackner. Kendall Achilles continued the inning in his first at-bat with a single to advance Smith to third, but Achilles was gunned down trying to stretch his hit to second. Ron Brown's RBI single sent Smith home for the 10-3 game.
After Noah Brewer reached on a walk for the Cardinals with runners on first and second with one out, Ryan Flores loaded the bases getting hit by a pitch and a Ridge Rogers' ground out scored Brown from third for the 10-4 McNeese lead. With runners on second and third, the Cowboys got out of the jam as Medina flew out to center and McNeese held on for the 10-4 win.
