HOUSTON – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team got its bats going, scoring 12 runs on 17 hits, but a late rally by Rice gave the Owls a 15-12 walk-off win in the tenth inning on Tuesday night, April 13, at Reckling Park.
The Owls rallied for three runs in the bottom half of the ninth inning to tie the game, 12-12, and a three-run home run by Braden Comeaux in the bottom of the tenth gave Rice the victory.
Jordan McFarland,
Ridge Rogers and
Zach Limas each had three hits to lead the Cardinals. McFarland finished 3-for-6 as Rogers and Limas both went 3-for-5 with a walk, an RBI and two runs scored.
The Cardinals (12-16, 8-12 SLC) jumped out to an early 10-3 lead after three innings, scoring three runs in the first, one in the second and six in the third as
Wilson Ehrhardt started the night with a solo home run on the second pitch of the game.
Grant Smith and
Lee Thomas rounded out the first inning scoring on a McFarland RBI single and
Josh Lackner RBI double, respectively.
The red and black exploded with six runs in the third inning as
Taylor Darden drew a leadoff walk,
Ron Brown doubled and Lackner reached on a Rice error to score Darden. A
Ridge Rogers RBI single continued the inning, Limas walked to load the bases and Ehrhardt was hit by a pitch to score Lackner. After a Rice pitching change, the Cardinals scored twice on a groundout by Smith and a sac fly from Thomas. Another McFarland finished off the inning with an RBI single for the 10-3 lead.
UIW pushed another run across in the fourth inning with an RBI double by Limas to score Rogers.
After the Owls (14-18-1, 2-9-1 C-USA) pushed two runs across in each of the third, fourth and fifth innings to make it an 11-9 game, the Cardinals added an insurance run in the seventh inning with Ehrhardt being awarded first base after a hit-by-pitch and scooted around to third on a wild pitch and a Thomas groundout. A McFarland RBI double to left field gave UIW the 12-9 lead before Rice mounted its comeback in the ninth and tenth innings.
