SAN ANTONIO – University of the Incarnate Word fell 57-75 to the Bobcats of Texas State University (TXST) on Tuesday evening at 6:30 p.m.
The Cardinals hosted the Bobcats in front of 657 home fans cheering them on throughout the entire game.
"We are very grateful for the crowd; they came out strong, it was awesome to see. Obviously, we wish we could've had a better first half for them, but they stayed and kept the energy up and our guys stayed with it. They fought against a very tough team that returns a lot on the Sunbelt Championship. We have to learn from it and have to get better every week and that's what we are going to try to do here," said head coach Carson Cunningham.
Josh Morgan led the Cardinals with 16 points followed by
Johnny Hughes III with 12 points. Hughes III and Morgan also led the Cardinals in rebounds combining for nine total. The Cardinals combined for seven three-pointers in tonight's matchup.
In the first half the Cardinals shot 42% for field goals compared to their 46% in the second half. The Cardinals also improved in turnovers from the 13 in the first half to only six in the second half.
"I thought we were sharing the ball a lot better. We got more accustomed to the pressure and physicality. We were able to space them out and knock down some shots. We are a good three-point shooting team but really couldn't buy a bucket in the first half and obviously turned the ball over too much. You have to give credit to Texas State, they played really hard and very experienced and physical basketball. All you can do is learn from these games early on and get better week to week so that you are ready to rock, and roll come conference," stated head coach Carson Cunningham.
TXST was led by Caleb Asberry who registered 20 points on the night. The Bobcats shot 61% for field goals and registered 22 rebounds.
