WACO, TX – University of the Incarnate Word falls to number eight, Baylor, 87-60 on Friday evening. The Cardinals traveled to Waco, Texas to compete against the Bears in an ESPN+ televised game.
Josh Morgan led the Cardinals with 17 points followed by Rj Glasper's 16 points.
Drew Lutz sparked the Cardinal offense in the first half scoring nine of his 12 points.
Benjamin Griscti also had a big offensive game registering 11 points on the night with three three-pointers. The Cardinal bench showed up combining for 18 points.
UIW came out strong to take the lead three different times in the first half. After being down 4-0, Griscti put the Cardinals on the board with a pull up jumper from the top of the key. The Cardinals then went on a 3-0 scoring run to tie the game at six when Lutz was fouled driving to the basket, securing both free throws. Lutz and Glasper hit back-to-back three-pointers to double their lead, 12-6. Glasper then fought for the defensive rebound and went cross-court for the layup to put the Cardinals up 16-10. The Bears went on their own scoring run to take back the lead, 21-19. The Cardinals battled back to come within two pints before Baylor took over to end the half 40-28.
The second half was dominated by the Bears, ultimately taking the 87-60 victory for their home opener. Baylor, the defending NCAA National Champions, was led by Matthew Mayer's 14 points and Flo Thamba on the defensive end with three blocks.
"We're grateful to have had this opportunity to compete at Baylor, which has a fantastic team & program. We got better today. We did some nice things, showed growth in areas. The key is for us to get better every week, win or lose, so that we can be as prepared as possible for conference. We need a high energy, focused approach as we prepare for the next one," said head coach
Dr. Carson Cunningham.
