SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word men's basketball team hosted Concordia University Texas (CTX) on Tuesday night. The Cardinals fell to the Tornados, 82-78.
Josh Morgan went 7-13 from the 3-point line and 9-18 on the night, totaling 28 points for the Cardinals.
Drew Lutz added 12 points, shooting 75 percent from behind the arc. RJ Glasper tallied 10 points and
Benjamin Griscti finished with nine points and nine rebounds for UIW.
"For us, this is clearly a very disappointing result," head coach
Dr. Carson Cunningham said. "I'm mad at myself for not doing a better job of getting us ready to play better. Obviously, we all need to be better. It's a gut-check for us to dig deep and fight to improve."
After a back-and forth start to the game that put CTX up by two, Morgan found his stride and hit UIW's next five shots, all 3-pointers, before GG Ezedinma added a layup to give the Cardinals their largest lead of the half, 23-15. CTX kept at the Cardinals' heels as the teams traded buckets, with a Griscti free throw in the final minute giving the Cardinals a one-point lead at the half (41-40).
Johnny Hughes III scored quickly in the second half to give the Cardinals a 43-40 advantage. UIW broke Concordia's full-court press to extend that lead to 50-45, but CTX knocked down a corner 3-pointer to jump ahead. The Cardinals continued to fight against the press, but CTX maintained its lead. Glasper nailed a 3-pointer at the buzzer, but it was not enough as the Tornados secured the win.
Four Concordia student-athletes finished in double figures for the Tornados.
"Coach Bonewitz and Concordia deserve a ton of credit for their performance tonight," Cunningham said. "They played incredibly well and deserve to enjoy it."
