SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word's men's basketball team fell 84-62 to Texas Tech University in the South Padre Island Battle on the Beach Tournament on Saturday.
Johnny Hughes III finished with a season-high 20 points and nine rebounds. RJ Glasper added 15 points and eight assists
, while
Benjamin Griscti had 12 points on the day.
The Cardinals and Red Raiders were neck-and-neck to start the game.
Josh Morgan sunk a three-pointer to give UIW a 13-11 lead, but Texas Tech jumped to a 10-point advantage. UIW regained some momentum when Morgan drained back-to-back threes to bring the Cardinals to within two (31-29). Glasper finished a layup before the end of the half and UIW headed to the locker room down five, 36-31.
Brandon Swaby dished the ball to Gricscti and the Cardinals cut the Red Raider's lead down to two early in the second half. Griscti pulled up for a three from the wing and the Cardinals were within two once more at 49-47. The Red Raiders then went on an 11-0 run and ultimately won
, 84-62.
"It was nice to see the fellas play with a lot of competitive fire and passion and hear them communicating well on the floor. This helped us win the first half rebound battle and stay within a bucket of Texas Tech well into the second half," head coach
Dr. Carson Cunningham said. "But alas, Texas Tech was able to pull away with a couple of runs. They deserve credit. Still, We got better today."
