Two Top 25 Contenders Face Off at Benson Stadium

SAN ANTONIO – University of the Incarnate Word, ranked at No. 22 in FCS programs, hosts No. 9 Southeastern Louisiana (SLU) for their final home game of the fall 2021 season. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. on Saturday, November 6. UIW will also be recognizing the seniors prior to the game for their annual senior day ceremony. UIW and SLU are currently ranked the top two teams in the Southland Conference. 
 
FOLLOW THE GAME   
THE LAST TIME THEY MET 
  • The two top programs last matched up on March 20, 2021, when the Cardinals defeated the Loins 56-45 for the most combined points between the two teams in their series history 
  • Cameron Ward passed for 407 yards and six touchdowns compared to SLU's Cole Kelly's 431 yards for three touchdowns on one interception 
  • Kevin Brown led the Cardinals with 190 rushing yards on one touchdown. Brown had a game long 75-yard rush
  • Robert Ferrel led the Cardinals with two receiving touchdowns on 58-yards 
  • SLU's Alexis Ramos led the Lions defense with 12 total tackles, one sack and one pass break up 
  • UIW's Kelechi Anyalebechi led the Cardinals defense with 14 total tackles and one quarterback hurry

  • Comes off a 49-21 win against Houston Baptist University to secure the best start in program history improving their overall record to 6-2 overall and 4-1 in Southland conference play
  • A win this weekend would make head coach Eric Morris the winningest coach in UIW program history 
  • The Cardinals rank 15 in completions percentage and six in first down offense conversions by FCS programs 
 
SLU
  • Ranked six by FCS Stats Perform 
  • Comes off a 23-20 close win against the Cowboys of McNeese 
  • Southeastern Louisiana ranks number one in team statistics by the FCS programs in third down conversion and completion percentage
  • The Lions are undefeated in the Southland Conference going into the final weeks of conference play
  • SLU is currently 7-1 overall and 5-0 in conference 
 
PLAYERS TO WATCH 
  • UIW's quarterback, Ward has completed 232 passes on 359 attempts with six interceptions on the season 
  • Ward has competed 2,807 total passing yards and 26 touchdowns, passing for over 300 yards in each of the past six games 
  • After only 13 career starts Ward now holds the UIW career passing touchdown record 
  • SLU's quarterback. Kelly has completed 234 passes on 320 attempts with six interceptions on the season 
  • Kelly had completed 2,987 total passing yards and 28 touchdowns 
  • UIW's Brown has rushed for 558 yards and eight touchdowns 
  • Marcus Cooper follows with 375 rushing yards on six touchdowns 
  • SLU's Kelly also leads the Lions in rushing yards with 340 net yards for nine touchdowns 
  • UIW's Taylor Grimes leads the Cardinals in receiving yards with 712 total yards on one touchdown 
  • Grimes set the UIW program records for most receiving touchdowns in a single game 
  • Grimes ranks 13 in the FCS for total receiving yards 
  • UIW's Ferrel follows with 457 receiving yards on five touchdowns 
  • SLU's Austin Mitchell leads the Lions in receiving yards completing six touchdowns and a season long 77-yard receiving touchdown 
  • Mitchell ranks right behind Grimes at number 14 in the FCS for total receiving yards
  • UIW's Anyalebechi leads the Cardinals defense with 86 total tackles, seven tackles for loss for 28 yards, 2.5 sacks, two interceptions, three pass breakup, two quarterback hurries and three forced fumbles
  • Anyalebechi ranks nineth in the FCS for total tackles 
  • SLU's Ramos leads the Cardinal defense with 48 total tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss for 11 yards, 0.5 sacks for 4 yards, four pass breakups, two quarterback hurries and one forced fumble
