UIW Travels to Louisiana for the Second Conference Game of the Season

SAN ANTONIO – University of the Incarnate Word travels to Natchitoches, Louisiana to face Northwestern State University in an ESPN+ televised game on Saturday, October 2 at 6 p.m. for the second conference game of the season.
 
FOLLOW THE GAME  
The Last Time They Met
  • UIW and NSU last faced off in the spring on April 10, 2021. NSU secured the 49-47 win against the Cardinals with a 32-yard field goal as time expired.
  • Keven Nguyen punted for a season-high three times for 178 yards.
  • Kevin Brown scored a season-high three touchdowns, marking the first time a Cardinal has scored three rushing TDs in a single game since Keyondrick Philio's three against Abilene Christian (Sept. 28, 2019). The three rushing touchdowns in the game are tied for second-best in UIW history and are the most in a single game since 2013.
  • Brown rushed for 160 yards, marking the fourth game he has rushed for over 100 yards.
  • Cameron Ward threw for 400-plus yards for the third consecutive game at 431 (33-59-1). With the two touchdown passes, one to Ferrel and one to Chafin, Ward tied the single season record for touchdown passes.
  • Gerald Bowie III powered the defense with eight tackles (five ast., three solo), a blocked PAT, one fumble recovery and recorded one solo sack for a loss of seven yards.
UIW
  • The Cardinals are 3-1 overall and 1-0 in Southland Conference play.
  • UIW is coming off a 31-0 shutout game against McNeese.
  • Ward threw for 352 yards and two touchdowns.
  • Brown rushed for 67 yards and one touchdown.
  • Trevor Begue rushed for 100-yards and a touchdown.
  •  Ward connected to Taylor Grimes in the first quarter to give the Cardinals a 14-0 early lead.
  • Ward then connected to Begue for a 56-yard touchdown to extend the lead to 21-0 heading into halftime.
  • In the third quarter, Ward found Grimes again for a 11-yard touchdown to extend the lead yet again to 28-0.
  • The early matchup ended with a field goal from Carson Mohr to bring the Cardinals to 31-0.
  • Kelechi Anyalebechi led the Cardinals to their first shutout in Division I program history, tallying 10 total tackles.
  • Rashon Davis registered one pick-six.
  • The Cardinals also secured three sacks throughout the game.
NSU
  • Is coming off a 35-10 loss against UT Martin for their 2021 home opener.
  • Went 1-for-6 in the red zone.
  • Kicker, Eddie Godina completed a 27-yard field goal in the first half to get the Demons on the board.
  • Quarterback Kaleb Fletcher found Jay Griffin for a 21-yard touchdown. Fletcher also had a career-high 71 rushing yards with 249 passing yards.
  • As a team, the Demons combined for 423 total yards, tallied 249 passing yards and rushed for 174-yards.
 
Players to Watch
  • UIW's Kevin Brown leads the Cardinals with 239 rushing yards and five touchdowns.
  • NSU Scooter Adams has compiled 206 rushing yards in the three games played so far this season.
  • UIW's quarterback Cameron Ward has complied 1,288 passing yards so far on the season with 13 touchdowns.
  • NSU's quarterback Kaleb Fletcher has passed for 622 yards with three touchdowns on the season.
  • UIW's Robert Ferrel leads the Cardinals in receiving yards with 281 in the four games played.
  • Taylor Grimes leads UIW with four receiving touchdowns.
  • NSU's Kendrick Price Jr. has received 143 yards for two touchdowns on the season.
  • Kelechi Anyalebechi leads the Cardinal's defense with 39 total tackles, two interceptions, two quarterback hurries and one forced fumble.
  • UIW's Kaleb Clup and Brandon Bowen follow suite combining for 50 total tackles on the season.
  • NSU's defense is led by Kyle Moore and Jomard Valson, both tallying 18 total tackles in the three games played.
  • NSU's Isaiah Longino leads the Demons in sacks (2), quarterback hurries (1) and forced fumbles (1).
