SAN ANTONIO -- The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team fell short, 8-6, against Southeastern Louisiana on Thursday night at Daniel Sullivan Field, sponsored by H-E-B.
NOTABLES
- Eddy Gonzalez led the Cardinals, going 4-for-5 with a double, a RBI and a stolen base.
- Ryan Gonzalez had a 3-for-4 outing, including a run, a RBI, a double and a walk.
- Bernie Martinez (9-2) suffered the loss, striking out six batters in 5.1 innings pitched.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Cardinals opened scoring in the bottom of the first.
Ryan Flores hit a two-RBI double before coming home on an E. Gonzalez double to give UIW the 3-0 advantage. The Lions then plated a run in the top of the third to make the score 3-1, in favor of UIW.
UIW extended its advantage to 4-1 in the bottom of the fourth when R. Gonzalez smacked a RBI double to drive in
Antonio Valdez.
SLU scored a run in the top of the fifth, but the Cardinals responded in the bottom of the frame when
Taylor Smith hit a solo home run to left field to make the score 5-2, with the Cardinals still on top.
The Lions knotted the game up at 5-5 in the top of the sixth after plating three runs, but UIW again had an answer. The Cardinals regained the lead, 6-5, in the bottom of the frame as
Ridge Rogers scored on a fielder's choice.
After a scoreless seventh frame, SLU scored three runs in the top of the eighth to take a 8-6 lead. The Cardinals fought back, but ultimately fell to the Lions, 8-6, in game one of the series.
