Cardinals come up short in Abilene

ABILENE -- The 2018-19 season has come to a close for the University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team. The Cardinals fell to Abilene Christian, 53-102, Saturday afternoon inside Moody Coliseum.

NOTABLES
  • Junior forward Alexis Henry set the UIW DI record for free-throw percentage in a single season (when attempting more than 2 FTs) sinking 27-30 attempts – 90 percent.
  • Redshirt senior guard Gabbi Bowie finished her senior season with 163 points, setting new career-highs in assists (57), three-pointers made (23), field goal percentage (33.3 percent) and three-point percentage (39 percent) for a single season.
  • She hit at least one three-pointer in each of her final 10 college contests, one of just four Cardinals in UIW DI history to have a three-point streak reach double-digit games.
  • Junior guard Imani Robinson set career-highs in minutes (810), assists (66) and steals (54).
  • Those 54 steals are the second most by a Cardinal in a single season in DI program history – Jazmine Holman, 72 steals in the 2014-15 season.
  • Sophomore guard Kara Speer established new career-highs in points (146), field goal percentage (31.9 percent), free-throw percentage (79.5 percent), rebounds (96) and assists (37).
  • Sophomore guard Liz Holter enjoyed a much-improved shooting season, setting career-highs in field goal percentage (33.8 percent), three-point percentage (36.6 percent) and free-throw percentage (85 percent).
  • Sophomore forward Olivia Noah delivered career-highs in points (117), free-throw percentage (72.2 percent), rebounds (45), assists (8) and blocks (five) this season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
QTR 1 (15-31): The Cardinals had a hard time containing the ACU offense early, allowing the Wildcats to jump out to a double-digit lead early. Noah made an immediate impact off the bench, scoring eight points in the final two minutes of the quarter to lead the team. ACU shot 80 percent from the field (12-15) in the frame.

QTR 2 (33-54): After withstanding the early Wildcat surge, UIW settled into the game, working for good looks on offense while having active hands on defense to force ACU turnovers. The Cardinals forced six ACU turnovers in the quarter, even holding the Wildcats scoreless for a stretch of 3:19 in the middle of the frame. But the three-ball started falling again for ACU and they finished the half up by 21.

QTR 3 (42-81): The Wildcats scored the first nine points of the second half and maintained that momentum for most the quarter. They led by 39 with one quarter to play.

QTR 4 (53-102): The Cardinals continued to battle through the end, but the deficit was too great to overcome and ACU secured its 20th victory of the season.
