SAN ANTONIO -- The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team dropped a 13-6 contest to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Friday night in its conference opener at Sullivan Field, sponsored by H-E-B.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Islanders opened scoring in the second frame, plating a run off an RBI single to take a 1-0 lead. The Cardinals responded in the bottom of the frame when
Antonio Valdez scored as
Eddy Gonzalez grounded out to first base, tying the game 1-1.
The Islanders regained the lead in the top of the fourth, adding one run to make the score 2-1. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi scattered 11 more runs across the fifth and sixth innings to extend its lead to 13-1.
The Cardinals rallied for three runs in the bottom of the eighth.
Taylor Smith hit a solo home run before
Sean Arnold singled to drive in
Lee Thomas and
Shea Gutierrez. The Cardinals added two additional runs in the bottom of the ninth as they attempted to complete their comeback.
Tyler Pettit doubled to bring home
Chance Medina and Valdez, but the rally fell short and TAMUCC secured the 13-6 victory.
