SAN ANTONIO -- The University of the Incarnate Word women's tennis team came up short in its dual against Nicholls by a score of 5-2 on Sunday at the Mabry Tennis Center.
 
The Cardinals battled hard in doubles competition with the top pairing of Sara Djurdjevic and Victoria Kareh taking a 6-4 win at No. 1. With Nicholls taking the third doubles match via forfeit, the crucial team point came down the No. 2 pairing of Alejandra Landaluce and Alejandra Tamayo. Both Cardinals put up a strong fight but ended up coming short in the tiebreaker and dropping the set, 7-6 (9-7), giving the Colonels a 1-0 lead in the dual.
 
The balls didn't bounce right for UIW in singles play where Nicholls took three of the five matches to clinch the dual result.
 
Despite the team result, Djurdjevic turned in an impressive day. After winning her doubles match, the Slovenian junior clawed her way back from down a set to earn a three-set victory at No. 2, finishing with a 2-0 record on the day.
 
Elsewhere in singles, the second UIW point of the day came courtesy of Taylor Parkinson at the No. 5 spot. The freshman showed tremendous fight to battle back from a set down, win the second set in thrilling, 7-5 fashion and eventually take the super set 10-5.
