SAN ANTONIO -- The University of the Incarnate Word women's tennis team was edged out by Sam Houston State University, 4-3, on Sunday at the Mabry Tennis Center.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Cardinals came out the swinging, dominating in doubles competition to secure an early 1-0 lead over SHSU. Court one showed
Brandelyn Fulgenzi and
Victoria Kareh's strength as a duo as they won, 6-2. The last duo standing determined UIW's doubles point, as
Sara Djurdjevic and
Jelena Dordan topped their Sam Houston opponents in a clutch 7-6 (7-5) win.
Singles matches fared as more of a battle, though.
Alejandra Tamayo earned UIW's second team point of the day on court five. The first set was an easy 6-0 smash over her competitor. Set two saw Tamayo halt an attempted SHSU comeback with a 7-6 victory.
In the last match to finish, Cardinals
Victoria Kareh had a marathon of a faceoff, finishing in three sets. In the first, Kareh fell 3-6. This only ignited her to fight back, dominating the next two sets with 6-2 and 10-5 finishes.
These clutch singles points were ultimately not enough to top SHSU, and the day concluded with UIW falling 4-3.
UP NEXT
The Cardinals have their last home match of their home stand on Monday as they face University of Southern Mississippi at 10 a.m. (CT). This will be mark as the first meeting of UIW and Southern Miss (7-1, 0-0 C-USA).
