Cardinals explode for 100 points to exorcise Lady Demons

SAN ANTONIO -- The University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team enjoyed one of its best team shooting performances of all-time Wednesday night as the Cardinals defeated the Northwestern State Lady Demons, 100-91, at the McDermott Center.

NOTABLES
  • This is the third 100+ point game in UIW history and just the second time to have done so in an SLC game.
  • Tonight was the most points scored by UIW since scoring 106 against LSU-Alexandria (12/20/16) and most to have scored in a conference game since going off for 101 against McNeese (1/22/15).
  • The Cardinals are one of two teams to hit the century mark in a conference game this season (ACU scored 109 against McNeese, 1/9/19).
  • UIW shot 13-26 (50 percent) as a team from beyond the arc, driven by a 5-7 (71.4 percent) performance from freshman guard Macy Ray.
  • They become the third SLC team to shoot 50 percent or better from deep in a conference game, while also making 13 or more triples in the same game.
  • That's tied for the most three-pointers hit as a team this season (vs. Rice 12/29/18) and the five from Ray lands as the second most made threes by an individual this season (Wiggins, 7, at UMASS 12/7/18).
  • Junior guard Angelica Wiggins led the team with a career-high 28 points. This adds up to the most points scored by a Cardinal this season and the most scored by Cardinal in a single game since December 20, 2016 when Haley Frias delivered 42 points against LSU-Alexandria.
  • Wiggins got 10 of those points from the free-throw line, where she shot a perfect 10-10, a new career high. She becomes the second Cardinal to go 10-10 from the charity stripe this season, after Bowie did so against New Orleans (1/26/19).
  • This was the second 20+ point performance in Wiggins' career (21 at UMASS 12/7).
  • Junior forward Lunden Henry dropped 20 points for the first time in her career. She also added six rebounds, a block and an assist.
  • Wiggins and L. Henry led UIW to 58 bench points, the most in DI history.
  • Senior Gabbi Bowie registered a career-high nine assists, the most dimes by a Cardinal in a single game since Cheyenne Berry had 11 (12/20/16).
  • Bowie also hit a three ball, extending her streak to seven straight games with a shot made from distance.
  • Ray scored all 15 of her points behind the three-point line.
  • Junior guard Imani Robinson went for 12 points, five rebounds, three steals, two blocks and an assist – her 10th game of the season to tally at least one of all five major stats.
  • Sophomore guard Kara Speer led the team in rebounds, hauling in seven.
  • Sophomore guard Liz Holter delivered 10 points off the bench, including a three-pointer, pushing her streak to six consecutive games with a made three.
  • The Cardinals shot 31-36 (86.1 percent) from the line, their best percentage of the season when attempting more than two free-throws and the second-best percentage of any SLC team when shooting more than 35 attempts.
  • The Cardinals have now shot 75 percent or better from the charity stripe in seven straight games and eight of their last nine.
  • UIW shot a season-best 45.2 percent from the field on a season-best 28 made field goals (28-62).
  • The Cardinals recorded a season-best 22 assists and seven blocks in the victory as well.

HOW IT HAPPENED
QTR 1 (23-18): The Cardinals got off to a sluggish start, allowing NSU to take a 13-5 lead at the 6:21 mark. But the switch soon flipped and UIW went on an 18-5 run to close out the quarter, fueled by seven points from RobinsonL. Henry was a force in the paint, collecting four points on a perfect 2-2 shooting performance. Speer hauled in five rebounds, including two offensive boards. The Cardinals out-rebounded NSU 14-8 in the opening frame, including seven offensive rebounds, leading to 12 second-chance points.

QTR 2 (42-29): UIW kept the momentum going into the second quarter, growing the lead to as many as 15 points halfway through the period (36-21). The play of Wiggins and Ray beyond the arc played a massive role in the quarter as they combined to shoot 4-5 from deep, helping the Cardinals maintain a safe distance throughout the quarter. Wiggins led the team with eight points. Robinson did her part on the defensive end, finding two steals to help UIW collect 10 of its 19 points in the frame off NSU turnovers. By halftime, UIW led by 13 points and was shooting a dastardly 53.3 percent from deep (8-15).

QTR 3 (67-58): The Lady Demons came out determined to close the gap in the second half, but just as they brought the lead down to four points (52-48), Wiggins went poured in a cool five straight points to give the Cardinals some breathing room. By the end of the frame, UIW still held a nine-point lead. Wiggins led the way with 10 points as Ray shifted her focus to distribution, racking up four assists.

QTR 4 (100-91): The lead continued to hover around 10 points throughout much of the fourth quarter until, with 1:20 remaining, the Lady Demons cut the deficit to just five, 92-87. But, as the NSU defense became more desperate, the Cardinal shooters stayed cool and calm, making all 10 of their free throw attempts within the final two minutes, including a 6-6 performance from Wiggins. UIW was a remarkable 22-23 from the line in the fourth quarter, allowing them to score a season-best 33 points in the frame. L. Henry, a 50 percent free-throw shooter entering play, went 5-6 from the line in the fourth quarter, including hitting a pair with just 18 seconds left, to secure the win for the Cardinals. L. Henry finished the quarter with a team-high 11 points. She also delivered a vicious blocked shot for the final defensive stop, leaving no room for hope from the NSU bench.

UP NEXT
The Cardinals look to keep the offensive explosion going into the second game of their three-game home stand, against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Tipoff is set for 1:00 p.m. (CT).
