Baseball secures win over No. 23 Texas A&M

COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team secured its second win over a Power 5 team in five days, this time with a 6-5 victory over No. 23 Texas A&M on Wednesday night at Blue Bell Park.

This win follows a 15-7 victory over ACC opponent Notre Dame on Saturday afternoon at Wolff Stadium.

NOTABLES
  • Jordan Thompson led the team with a double and a home run, recording three RBI and a run. His three-RBI home run ended up being the hit that secured the victory for the Cardinals.
  • Six Cardinals -- Sean Arnold (2), Ryan Gonzalez (2), Taylor Smith (2), Antonio Valdez (2), Thompson (2), and Ryan Flores (2) -- each had multi-hit games.
  • Bernie Martinez (3-0) earned the win for the Cardinals, pitching 4.2 innings and throwing one strikeout. Martinez held the Aggies to just two hits and one run.
  • With Kyle Bergeron's sacrifice fly in the first inning, the Cardinals have 10 sac flies on the season. Entering this game, UIW had a nation-leading nine sacrifice flies.
  • This is the first time in program history that the Cardinals have topped two Power 5 opponents in one week.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Cardinals wasted no time taking the lead against the Aggies, scoring in the top of the first inning. Bergeron hit a sacrifice fly to plate Arnold and put UIW up 1-0.

In the second inning, the Aggies came back and scored two runs to take a 2-1 lead, but the Cardinals responded in the next frame. UIW tied the game when Smith smacked a double to right center, sending R. Gonzalez home and knotting the game, 2-2.

The Cardinals regained the lead in the top of the fifth when Valdez singled to drive in Smith. Gaining momentum, Thompson blasted a three-RBI home run to left field, giving UIW the 6-2 lead.

The Aggies plated three runs over the fifth and sixth innings, but the Cardinals held off the rally and secured the 6-5 win over the SEC foe.
