SAN ANTONIO -- The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team bounced back from a 3-2 loss in Saturday's game one to secure a dominating, 12-1 victory in game two of the doubleheader against Hofstra at Sullivan Field Sponsored by H-E-B.
HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME 1
Both teams were held scoreless through four innings. The Cardinals got on the board in the bottom of the fifth when
Ridge Rogers hit a sacrifice fly to drive in
Antonio Valdez, giving UIW a 1-0 lead.
Hofstra jumped ahead in the top of the sixth off a Rob Weissheier three-run home run as the Pride took a 3-1 advantage.
The Cardinals responded with a run in the bottom of the eighth.
Taylor Smith hit a sacrifice fly to bring home
Ryan Gonzalez, but the rally fell short as Hofstra secured the 3-2 win.
GAME 2
In the bottom of the first frame,
Ridge Rogers scored on a double play to give UIW a 1-0 lead.
The Cardinals added insurance in the bottom of the sixth.
Jordan Thompson hit a bases-clearing double, driving in three runs to give UIW a 4-0 advantage.
UIW added eight more runs in the bottom of the eighth. Hofstra scored a run in the top of the ninth, but UIW closed out the game and secured the 12-1 win.
NOTABLES
- Tyler Miller recorded five strikeouts in five innings pitched (game one).
- Bernie Martinez recorded seven strikeouts while holding Hofstra scoreless through six innings (game two).
- Jordan Thompson paced the team in game two with a 2-for-4 outing, including 5 RBI, a run and a double.
