Soccer sets sights on 2020, signs six

SAN ANTONIO -- The University of the Incarnate Word women's soccer team signed six incoming freshmen on National Signing Day. New Cardinals hail from Colorado, New Mexico and Texas.

"Our 2020 class is a very exciting class fueled with lots of electrifying talent. My staff and I have worked hard over the last 18 months to look for special players and exceptional people that can come in and continue to push and drive our program to the next level."

Nicole Estrada | 5'11" | D | Albuquerque, N.M.
 

  • Estrada comes from Cibola high school, where she started every game since her freshman year on the varsity team.
  • As an Honor Roll and AP student, Estrada maintains above a 3.5 GPA. Extracurricular activities are important to the incoming freshman, as she was president of the Spanish National Honors Society, while also vice president of her school's National Honors Society and Speech and Debate Club.
  • Nicole Estrada was named to the 5A All-District First Team for the 2019-20 season. Her high school team was the APS Metro Champion and the District runner-up.
  • Estrada intends to pursue a degree in political science.
  • Head Coach Emma Wright-Cates on Estrada: "Nicole is a very good defender and reads the game very well. She is smart on the ball and makes great decisions. Academically she is an avid student and a great advocate of what a student athlete represents."

Makenzie Hall | 5'10" | GK | McKinney, Texas

  • Hall comes from McKinney Boyd High School, where she maintained above a 3.5 GPA all four years.
  • She led her team to place second in District playoffs and was named to the All-District Honorable Mention Team her junior year. Hall was Second Team All-District as a sophomore.
  • Intends to pursue a degree in rehabilitative science with the goal of becoming a physical therapist.
  • Head Coach Emma Wright-Cates on Hall: "Mak is a very impressive GK. On the field her ability to vocally command her box and backline, distribute and shot-stop are top notch. Off the field she is an incredible human being. We are very excited to add her to this stellar class and see her continue to grow and challenge in this position."

Lauren Miller | 5'5" | M | Prosper, Texas

  • Miller comes from Prosper High School, where she was a National Honor Society member.
  • During her junior year, Miller was named to the 9-6A District All-Academic team, earned All-Region Honorable Mention and was 9-6A District Utility Player of the Year.
  • Miller intends to pursue a major in physical therapy and would like to own her own business.
  • Head Coach Emma Wright-Cates on Miller: "Miller is a very exciting player. She has tremendous energy and urgency about her game. Her technical and tactical ability will definitely raise our tempo going forward. On and off the field she is so positive and determined we are excited to coach her at the next level."

Bailey Moyer | 5'2" | D/M | Highlands Ranch, Colo.

  • Moyer comes from ThunderRidge High School, where she played on the varsity team all four years.
  • During her senior year, Moyer was named team captain and First Team All-League.
  • She led her team to win the Continental League Championships in 2017 and 2019.
  • Moyer intends to pursue a major in business.
  • Head Coach Emma Wright-Cates on Moyer: "Bailey is electric on the field, her work rate and energy are infectious and she is a very fun player to watch. She has a great mindset and is focused on and off the field and very passionate about giving back to the community which fits right in with our team dynamics."

Drew Walker | 5'7" | D | Plano, Texas

  • Walker comes from Hebron High School, where she was an AP Scholar.
  • As a powerful force on the defensive line, she played for FC Dallas Development Academy, which placed third in the 2019 DA Playoffs.
  • Intends to pursue a degree in biology with hopes of becoming an orthopedic surgeon.
  • Head Coach Emma Wright-Cates on Walker: "Drew is a very tough defender to beat. She is good in the air, quick and very strong. She will be a great addition to challenge for a spot in our backline and is a fantastic person that fits nicely with our current team characteristics."

Sierra Wannamaker | 5'8" | D/M | San Antonio, Texas

  • Wannamaker comes from James Madison High School, where she was named to the Academic All-District Team, All-Region Team, All-State Team and Super Team.
  • She was named Player of the Year on the San Antonio Express-News' 2018-19 All-Area girls soccer team.
  • Assertive on both sides of the pitch, Wannamaker tallied 18 goals and seven assists in her senior year, while also being a part of a defensive force that amassed 10 shutouts with a .78 GAA.
  • Intends to pursue a degree in business.
  • Head Coach Emma Wright-Cates on Wannamaker: "Sierra is an incredible local talent. Her ability both sides of the ball is fantastic. She has a great warming personality, is extremely driven and we are all very excited to have her in our Cardinal family."
