UIW men’s basketball hosts Texas Lutheran in home opener

SAN ANTONIO -- The University of the Incarnate Word men's basketball team returns to the Alamo City for its home opener against the Texas Lutheran Bulldogs at 7 p.m. (CT) Tuesday at the McDermott Center.

"We are excited to open the season at home," Cardinals coach Carson Cunningham said. "The fellas have been competing hard in practice and are eager to hit the new hardwood for the first time in a real game. Texas Lutheran has versatile players who can shoot the apple. We need to be locked in. Come out and support your Cardinals."

TIPOFF COVERAGE SERIES HISTORY
The Cardinals lead the series 30-11, winning all four matchups since moving to Division I in 2013-14.

SCORING GUARDS
Freshman guard Drew Lutz and sophomore Morgan Taylor have combined to score 51 points in the first two games of the season. With 31 of those points, Lutz has scored more points in his first two games than any other freshman since UIW moved to Division I in 2013-14.

ENE COMING ALIVE
In the loss to Northern Colorado, junior forward Augustine Ene scored 10 points on 4-5 shooting from the field in 24 minutes, adding two rebounds and an assist.

CLEANING UP THE GLASS
Freshman forward Vincent Miszkiewicz is averaging 6.5 rebounds per game to lead the Cardinals, including a 10-rebound performance against Missouri to open the season.

THREATS FROM DEEP
Lutz and Ene shot the lights out from beyond the arc against Missouri, hitting five of their six combined attempts from three-point range.

SCOUTING TEXAS LUTHERAN
  • Texas Lutheran went 18-10 last season, winning the SCAC regular season conference championship for the fourth time in the last five years.
  • The Bulldogs lost most of their lineup from last season's team. Of the top-seven scorers from last year, only junior guard Sebastian Andrade returns. TLU's other six top scorers from 2018-19 all were seniors.
  • Those six seniors contributed 56 of TLU's 74.9 points per game last year. The Bulldogs also only return 10.4 rebounds per game of the 25.1 per game the team averaged last season.
  • The Bulldogs picked up their first win of the season with a 60-59 victory over McMurry, winning on a jump shot from Andrade with just five seconds left in the game.
  • In the win against McMurry, forward Caleb Lister scored a career-high 27 points, five rebounds and one steal.
  • In the same game, former UIW Cardinal Jorden Kite contributed seven points with three assists and two steals.
