UIW comes up short in Creeds & Crests Classic Finale

SAN MARCOS -- The University of the Incarnate Word volleyball team concluded the Creeds & Crests Classic on Saturday, falling to host Texas State (4-2), 3-0. The Cardinals kept it close in all three sets, but the Bobcats rode late rallies to victory throughout.

NOTABLES
  • Freshman setter Kendall Kilchrist enjoyed her best game as a Cardinal to-date, tallying a season-high 25 assists.
  • Freshman outside hitter Bethany Clapp led a balanced offensive attack with nine kills. Senior outside hitter Autumn Lockley and sophomore outside hitter Julia Monday each added eight kills of their own, marking a season high for Monday. It was the second time this season that at least three players registered eight or more kills in the same match (Lockley, Clapp and Carissa McGarity vs. Louisiana on 8/24)
  • Monday finished with a career-best .500 hitting percentage. She surpassed her previous high (.321) set against Southeastern Louisiana in 2017.
  • Lockley set a new season high, recording five blocks. She last accomplished this feat at HBU on November 10, 2016.
  • Junior outside hitter Cameron Edwards, sophomore defensive specialist Madelynn Miller and Kilchrist led the team with seven digs each.
  • The Cardinal defense made eight total blocks while holding Texas State to a .262 hitting percentage as a team, the lowest opponent's hitting percentage of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
SET 1 (19-25) | Texas State got off to a hot start, securing an early 5-2 lead, but a kill from Clapp sparked a Cardinal run, allowing UIW to claw back into the set. The Cardinals kept it close throughout, taking a 15-14 lead before the Bobcats took the final five points of the set to win, 25-19. Clapp led UIW with four kills.

SET 2 (19-25) | The second set was a back and forth affair, with 14 ties and neither team taking more than a two-point lead. With the score tied 18-18, Texas State managed a four-point rally and used that momentum to secure a 25-19 set victory. Lockley led the way with four kills and two blocks in the set.

SET 3 (20-25) | UIW came out firing in the third set, riding a clinical hitting performance from Monday to an 18-13 lead. The Bobcats pulled away late, winning the final six points of the set to win the match. Monday finished the set with three kills and concluded the match with a career-high .500 hitting percentage.

HEAR FROM HEAD COACH SAMANTHA DABBS
"Today, our team got better for sure. Texas State is a big, well-coached team. We mainly focused on our defense today. We went in to this match knowing we had to have a great frontline blocking and a great backline.

Madelynn and Cameron had some great digs that kept us in this match. We served aggressively and got Texas State out of system which made our job easier.

Julia played really well today. I made the transition with Monday from the outside to the right side two weeks ago. Once she starts getting more comfortable on the right, she'll be unstoppable."

UP NEXT
