FRISCO, Texas -- University of the Incarnate Word baseball student-athletes
Kyle Bergeron and
Mark Whitehead earned Academic All-Southland Conference honors, the league office announced Thursday. Bergeron was named to the first team as a second baseman, while Whitehead was selected for the second team as an outfielder.

"Kyle and Mark put in the time away from the ballpark that it takes to be great in the classroom," said UIW head coach
Patrick Hallmark. "They've set the bar high for what we want our players to be both on the field and off. We are certainly proud of them."

To be eligible for academic all-conference honors, student-athletes must have above a 3.00 cumulative GPA. Additionally, they must have completed at least one year at their current institution and have played in at least 50 percent of the team's games at their position.

Bergeron is a business administration major with a minor in finance, while Whitehead majored in business administration with a concentration in marketing.

Bergeron played and started in 55 games for the Cardinals, primarily at second base. He finished the regular season ranked second in the league with 50 RBI. Bergeron also tallied 75 hits, good for fifth in the conference. He averaged 1.36 hits per game, which ranked sixth in the SLC. The Bridge City, Texas, native was seventh in the league with 46 runs.

Bergeron led the team with 22 multi-hit games, including 15 games with two hits, four games with three hits, and three games with four hits. He also led the team with 13 mutli-RBI games -- seven with two RBI, four with three RBI, and two with four RBI. Bergeron had a 13-game hitting streak and reached base in 20 consecutive games. Following the season, Bergeron was selected as the first team All-SLC second basemen.

Whitehead played and started 42 games in the outfield for the Cardinals. He registered 41 hits with eight doubles and a triple en route to a .349 slugging percentage. Whitehead tallied 36 runs, 13 RBIs, and was walked 40 times for a .466 on-base percentage. In addition, the San Antonio native led UIW with 13 stolen bases.

Whitehead was third on the team with a 24-game reached base streak and posted a season-high eight-game hitting streak. Whitehead had a season-best four hits on two separate occasions -- he was 4-for-5 with two runs against Northwestern State on May 6 and went 4-for-7 with four runs at Prairie View A&M on April 17.
