AUSTIN – Errors and untimely hitting cost the University of the Incarnate Word softball team in a doubleheader at Texas, losing 5-2 and 8-0 in six innings, Wednesday evening from McCombs Field.
The Cardinals had five errors on the day and left a combined 11 runners on base.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1: Texas 5, UIW 2
UIW (14-32) took a 2-1 lead in the top of the second on
Emily Castro's RBI single, but Texas (30-21) scored four times in the bottom half of the inning and held on for the 5-2 win. UIW left eight runners on base in the contest, compared to five for the Longhorns.
Five different Cardinals registered a hit, with Castro and
Delaney Guzman recording an RBI apiece.
Sarah Leal took the loss in the circle, as she allowed eight hits, five runs (three earned), and two walks while striking out three in the complete-game effort.
Randel Leahy and Ki'Audra Hayter each had two hits to lead the Longhorn offense. Erica Wright earned the win in the circle, as she allowed four hits and one earned run in four innings, while Paige von Sprecken pitched a scoreless two innings to secure the save.
Game 2: Texas 8, UIW 0 (6 innings)
UT scored single runs in the bottom of the second and third to take a 2-0 lead.
The Longhorns broke the game open with a five-run fourth inning to take a 7-0 lead. Back-to-back two-run doubles highlighted the inning. Leahy's RBI single in the bottom of the sixth put the run rule into effect.
UIW was held to just three hits in the second game:
Marcela Lopez,
Shelby Neatherlin, and
Brett Coleman. The latter, who is now batting .667 (2-for-3), pitched two strong innings in the circle for the Cardinals, as she allowed two hits, one run, and a pair of walks while striking out one. Starter
Breanna Hernandez took the loss, as she gave up six hits, seven runs (three earned), and three walks in 3.2 innings.
Hayter went 2-for-3 to lead UT, while Janae Jefferson had a pair of RBIs. Brooke Bollinger got the win in the circle, as she allowed one hit and struck out two in four innings.

UIW ends the season hosting Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in a three-game Southland Conference series Friday and Saturday, May 4-5, at Cardinals Field. Friday's doubleheader is scheduled for 5 and 7 p.m., while Saturday's finale is set for noon. Regardless of the weather, Senior Day for
