NEW ORLEANS -- The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team dropped a 6-5, 11-inning decision to the University of New Orleans on Friday night at Maestri Field.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
UIW took an early 1-0 lead when
David Anaya's single through the left side brought home
Mark Whitehead.
Â
The Privateers then took the lead in the bottom of the frame, scoring on a two-RBI double down the left field line and an RBI single up the middle for the 3-1 advantage. The Cardinals responded in the second inning when
Ryan Gonzalez scored on a Whitehead groundout before
Ridge Rogers used an RBI single to center to plate
Lee Thomas, knotting the game at 3-3.
Â
The next seven innings featured a pitching duel, with neither team scoring to force extra innings. UIW's
Eddy Gonzalez used an RBI double down the right field line to bring home Anaya in the 10th frame, but a UNO RBI single to left field drew the game even at 4-4 to force another inning.
Â
Kyle Bergeron then smacked a double to right field, scoring
Christian Rodriguez to give UIW the 5-4 lead in the top of the 11th, but New Orleans hit a two-RBI home run to left field in the bottom of the inning to capture a 6-5 win.
