Women’s hoops prepares for road game at UMASS

AMHERST, Mass. -- The University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team concludes its final road trip of non-conference play when they visit UMASS for a 6:00 p.m. CT contest at the William D. Mullins Center.

GELLING ON OFFENSE
  • Junior guard Angelica Wiggins leads the team with 15 three pointers made.
  • She is coming into form in a Cardinal jersey, averaging 12 points, 2.5 made three-pointers, 2.75 rebounds and 1.25 assists in her last four games
  • She enjoyed a breakout game against Weber State (11/21), pouring in 19 points on four made three-pointers. It's the most points a Cardinal has scored this season.
  • The Toronto native has made multiple three-pointers in three of her last four games played and five of her last seven.
  • Wiggins leads the team with five blocks this season.
 
THE TOWER OF LUNDEN
  • Junior forward Lunden Henry transferred to UIW from Moberly Area Community College, along with Wiggins and Lunden's twin sister Alexis Henry. Their team last year went 32-1 last season and earned a 3rd overall seed in the NJCAA Division 1 national tournament.
  • Since arriving in the Alamo City, Henry has established herself as the Cardinal's leading presence in the paint. She averages 8.2 points per game on a team-leading .390 shooting, while pulling in an average of 5.4 rebounds per contest.
  • Lunden has proven to be a hard worker on the offensive glass, leading the team with 26 offensive rebounds this season, including a season-high six in her last outing against UTA (Dec. 2).
 
NONCONFERENCE GUANTLET
  • The non-conference schedule is loaded with notable opposition.
  • Nine of the 11 non-conference opponents are coming off winning seasons.
  • The season opener was at Arizona State, a team that reached the second round of the 2018 NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Tournament.
  • That was one of two games against 2018 NCAA Tournament teams, as UIW visits Minnesota on Dec. 5.
  • South Dakota, Houston, and Rice each took part in the WNIT.
  • Weber State (WBI) also saw postseason play in 2017-18.
  • UIW is the only team in the Southland Conference not to schedule a non-Division I opponent this season.
 
SCOUTING UMASS
  • The Minutewomen enter the game with a 5-4 record after falling to Northeastern ion a buzzer beater Sunday afternoon, 53-52.
  • They are 3-1 at home, with their only loss coming last Wednesday (Nov. 28) against North Dakota.
  • UMASS is employs a two-pronged attack on the offensive end. Sophomore guard Bre Hampton-Bey leads the team with 13.8 points per game, followed closely by junior combo player Hailey Leidel, who averages 13.7 per game.
  • This is the second ever meeting between UIW and UMASS, the Minutewomen got the better of the Cardinals last season, 64-45, in San Antonio (Nov. 29, 2017).
 
UP NEXT
UIW will enjoy a break for finals and the holidays, before playing its non-conference finale against Rice on Dec. 29 at 1:00 p.m. CT in the McDermott Center. Southland Conference play will follow soon after, when the Cardinals go on the road to face McNeese on Jan. 2, 2019. Tip-off for that game is set for 6:30 p.m.
