SAN ANTONIO –
Christian Peevy's 23 points, double-digit scoring by three of his teammates, 55 percent shooting from the floor, and another sizzling performance by the nation's leading free throw-shooting squad gave the University of the Incarnate Word men's basketball team an 82-57 victory over Trinity University in a neighborhood rivalry game on Tuesday at the McDermott Center.
UIW evened its season record at 5-5.
SUPERLATIVES
- Peevy shot 8-13 from the floor and 7-7 from the charity stripe to turn in his sixth double-digit scoring game of the year. It was the third consecutive game in which he has scored more than 20 points.
- Peevy also snagged 11 rebounds, marking his first double-double of the season
- UIW shot 83 percent from the free-throw line, hitting 15 of 18, buttressing its statistical lead over 351 fellow Division I teams.
- Charles Brown III scored 12, Jorden Kite 11, and Antoine Smith Jr. 10.
- UIW almost doubled Trinity's rebounding total, 41 to 22.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half:
- UIW started Peevy, Brown, Dwight Murray Jr., Augustine Ene, and Morgan Taylor.
- UIW led 7-6 at the first media timeout. Peevy scored all seven points.
- Then Brown hit consecutive three-pointers to put UIW ahead, 13-6.
- Thanks to deadly shooting from the three-point line, the Cardinals opened a 25-15 lead with nine minutes left in the first half.
- Ene's layup at 6:18 gave the Cardinals a 12-point lead.
- Peevy's layup at 4:19 gave UIW a 33-22 lead, Peevy's 13th point of the evening.
- Trinity cut the lead to six points with 3:19 remaining on a bucket and three-pointer by Tyler Peavy.
- But an 8-0 run in the final minute gave UIW its largest lead of the game, 41-27, at halftime.
- Peevy had 15 points, hitting five of his nine shots, to lead all scorers.
- UIW shot 57 percent from the field and 5-6 from the line. Trinity shot 40 percent from the floor.
Second Half:
- UIW opened a 16-point lead to begin the second half on two free throws by Brown, and later sustained that lead on a field goal by Brown.
- A tip-in by Peevy, his 19th point of the game, gave UIW its biggest lead to that point, 51-34.
- A subsequent basket by Peevy gave UIW a 19-point lead.
- A steal by Ene, followed by his driving dunk, increased the margin to 21.
- Trinity cut the Cardinal lead to 14, but with seven minutes left, UIW had built it back to 65-44 -- thanks to opportune shooting by Peevy and Kite, and a 12-0 run midway through the half.
- A third three-pointer was a season high for Jorden Kite, who ended the night with 11 points.
- An 11-2 run to end the game gave UIW its 25-point margin of victory.
