EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – University of the Incarnate Word sophomore
Christian Peevy scored a career high of 32 points, but Southern Illinois University Edwardsville overcame a halftime deficit to defeat the Cardinals, 80-68, on Sunday afternoon in a non-conference basketball game.
NOTABLES
- It was the second straight game in which Peevy has led all Cardinal scorers. He scored 26 points against Northern Colorado on Wednesday night, also a career high.
- Peevy's previous scoring maximum was a 24-point performance against Central Arkansas during the 2017-18 season.
- Peevy has scored in double digits in five games this year.
- The Cardinals hit 23 of 25 free throws.
- The Cougars shot 63 percent from the floor in the second half.
- UIW is now 4-5 on the season. SIUE is 1-3.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half:
- UIW started: Dwight Murray Jr., Christian Peevy, Cody Graham, Augustine Ene and Morgan Taylor
- UIW took an 8-0 lead on two baskets by Peevy, one by Taylor, and two free throws by Ene.
- SIUE did not score until 13:30 remained in the first half.
- The Cougars went on 6-0 run, but Ene had a steal, layup and free throw to make it 13-8 in favor of UIW.
- UIW led by eight at the 11:54 mark, but SIUE cut the lead to two points by 10:59.
- For the next six minutes, the UIW lead varied between two and five points.
- SIUE took a two-point lead at 4:29 and increased it to four at 2:22.
- Free throws by Smith and a basket by Peevy reclaimed the UIW lead, by three, late in the half.
- UIW led 27-26 at halftime.
- UIW's largest lead was eight points on two occasions. SIUE's largest lead was four.
- The Cardinals shot 42 percent from the floor in the first half but was 7-8 from the free-throw line.
- Peevy led the Cardinals with 12 points at halftime. Antoine Smith had six and Ene had five.
- UIW out rebounded SIUE, 18-16, in the first half.
Second Half:
- SIUE and UIW traded baskets at the beginning of the second half.
- Peevy's two free throws at 17:05 tied the score, 33-33.
- SIUE took a 40-33 lead at the 15:25 mark, capping a 7-0 run.
- Peevy's three-point play cut the Cougars' lead to four.
- A three-pointer by Antoine Smith Jr. cut the SIUE lead to three.
- SIUE established a 10-pont lead with 11 minutes to go in the game.
- The Cougars went ahead, 61-47, with 8:50 left.
- Throughout the first 12 minutes of the second half, SIUE shot 75 percent from the floor.
- SIUE took a 15-point lead with seven minutes left.
- SIUE led by 18 with 2:30 left.
COACH CUNNINGHAM SAID
"We did some nice things, but we need to work on sustaining quality play. We're getting better in facets and need to keep plugging. SIUE deserves credit. They caught on fire in the second half. We're looking forward to some rest after nine games in 19 days."
