SAN ANTONIO --
The University of the Incarnate Word's men's basketball team seeks a third consecutive win when it concludes a three-game homestand on Monday evening, taking on Texas Lutheran in a 7 p.m. (CT) game at the McDermott Center.

GOING FOR THREE IN A ROW
  • The Cardinals have a 2-1 record this season after Friday night's 63-49 win over St. Francis of Illinois and Saturday's 66-54 defeat of UT Tyler.
  • Senior Charles Brown III came off of the bench Friday night to lead all UIW scorers with 14 points. Sophomore Christian Peevy contributed nine. The Cardinals opened a 10-point lead, lost it briefly, but then rallied for a 14-point win.
  • Freshman Morgan Taylor contributed 19 points to UIW's effort on Saturday, a game in which the Cardinals established several 22-point leads during the second half. Peevy scored 15 points against the Patriots.
  • After each game, Cardinal Head Coach Dr. Carson Cunningham praised his team's defensive efforts. On Saturday, UIW's pressure defense limited the Patriots' inside scoring opportunities and forced the visitors to take 33 of their 55 shots from beyond the three-point arc.
  • During Saturday's first half, the Cardinals' defense caused more turnovers (10) than the Patriots scored field goals (six).
FERSHMEN CONTRIBUTIONS
  • Eight out of nine Cardinal newcomers are true freshmen.
  • For each of the past two games, Cunningham's starting five has consisted of four freshmen and one sophomore.
  • Taylor, a 6-3 guard from Chicago, has shared the point guard responsibilities, averaging 13 points and almost three assists per game. Antoine Smith Jr., a 6-7 forward from Westerville, Ohio, averages six rebounds per game.
SCOUTING TEXAS LUTHERAN
  • Texas Lutheran opened its season Saturday night with a 90-87 loss to Mary Hardin-Baylor in Seguin's Memorial Gymnasium.
  • Monday night's game will be an exhibition game for Texas Lutheran. It will count as a regular-season game for UIW.
  • Texas Lutheran University, located in some 36 miles from San Antonio in Seguin, Texas, has been a frequent competitor with UIW on the hardwood. The Cardinals lead the all-time series by a margin of 29-11.
  • San Antonio-area basketball fans should have a special interest in turning out for Monday night's game against Texas Lutheran. An accomplished former local high school coach will be patrolling the Bulldogs' sideline. Mike Wacker coached for 26 years at Converse Judson and achieved a record of 703-196 (.782). He led the Rockets to 25 state playoff berths and three appearances in the UIL Boys Basketball State Championship. Wacker is beginning his third year as head coach at Texas Lutheran.
  • Five of the Bulldog players list San Antonio as their hometowns.
  • Texas Lutheran plays in the American Southwest Conference, an NCAA Division III affiliate.
