HOUSTON, Texas – The University of the Incarnate Word volleyball team dropped their first match of the Rice Adidas Invitational I in three sets.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Christine Alftin made a kill to score the first point of set one for the Bears.
Sarea Alexander retaliated with a kill to get the Cardinal attack going. UIW and Cal battled back and forth, until the Bears ran away with the lead to take set one 25-15.
The Cardinals jumped out to an early 7-3 lead, but errors allowed the Bears to quickly even the score 8-8. Soon enough, Cal went on a six point streak causing UIW to trail 15-9. The Cardinal attack struggled to produce as the team was only able to register nine kills compared to the 14 made by the Bears. Set two ended in a 25-17 victory for Cal.
UIW put up a good fight in set three, but it was not enough to outlast Cal. The Cardinals finished their last set a few points short of a set win 25-23. At the end of day one, UIW had 30 kills with an attacking percentage of .205 as team.
LEADERS
For the second match in a row,
Bryaunea Hall led the Cardinals with seven kills and a block.
Cameron Edwards contributed six kills, while
Sarea Alexander tallied six kills and two blocks.
Madison Williams paced the team with 23 assists. Defensively, Madelyn Miller led the team with nine digs.
Christine Alftin and Mima Mirkovic both registered ten kills for the Bears.
UP NEXT
UIW concludes the tournament against Rice tomorrow at 4.pm.

The Cardinals will open conference in New Orleans, Louisiana against the Privateers. The match is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 21 at 6:30 p.m. in the Human Performance Center.
