EDINBURG, Texas – UT-Rio Grande Valley scored a goal in each half and shutout The University of the Incarnate Word women's soccer, 2-0, Sunday afternoon from the UTRGV Soccer and Track Complex.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The match was scoreless until the Vaqueros' (4-3-2) Andreya Barrera found the back of the net with just three minutes to go in the opening half, as she intercepted a pass and curled the ball past UIW (1-5-0) goalkeeper,
Katrina Buck. Prior to that, the Vaqueros had a golden opportunity to score the game's first goal in the 12
th minute, but Marcela Ramirez's header attempt was saved by the Cardinal defense. UTRGV outshot the Cardinals, 11-5, and 5-2 in shots on goal in the first half.
The Vaqueros doubled their lead with a header goal from America Martinez in the 62
nd minute, as Anna Hover sent in the centering pass.
LEADERS
Sam Batley took a match-high four shots, with one hitting the target.
Brooke Hanson had three total shots, while both
Emily Halal and
Emani Stewart had two. In goal,
Katrina Buck (1-2-0) suffered the loss as she made five saves.
Along with Barrera and Martinez, the big play-maker for UTRGV was Sarah Bonney, who took a team-best three shots. In goal, Erica Gonzalez stopped all six shots for the win.
UIW outshot the Vaqueros, 10-6, in the second half, but the hosts won the match category, 17-15. The Vaqueros had nine of the match's 11 corner kicks.
