PULLMAN, Washington - The University of the Incarnate Word Volleyball team wrapped up day one of the Cougar Challenge Tournament with a 1-1 record. The Cardinals kicked off the event with a 3-2 victory over the Quinnipiac Bobcats, but were unable to earn an upset win against the No. 28 Washington State University Cougars.
Match 1
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Cardinals came out on top after a five-set battle with the Bobcats: 25-21, 19-25, 25-15, 16-25, 15-6. The team finished the first game of the 2017 season with 54 kills and a .230 attacking percentage.
LEADERS
Autumn Lockley led UIW with 13 kills, followed by
Cameron Edwards (12) and
Bryaunea Hall (11).
Madison Williams' 41 assists were a key contribution to the Cardinal victory. Defensively,
Brittany Muller led the team with 14 digs.
On the other side of the net, Kat Miller led the Bobcats with 14 kills and 12 digs, while Maria Pansari added 27 assists.
Match 2
HOW IT HAPPENED
Washington State took game two from the Cardinals in three sets: 17-25, 21-25, 18-25. The Cougars had 37 kills, compared to just 9 attacking errors, while UIW totaled 33 kills and 17 errors in the match.
LEADERS
Sarea Alexander led the Cardinals with 13 kills and a .467 attacking percentage.
Autumn Lockley added a couple of service aces, while
Madison Williams paced the squad in assists again, with 23. On defense,
Bryaunea Hall contributed a pair of blocks and Madison
Madelynn Miller had 8 digs.
Ella Lajos tallied 10 kills and 6 blocks to lead Washington State. Ashley brown paced the team with 14 assists.

UIW concludes the Cougar Challenge tomorrow against the College of Charleston at 4:30 p.m.
