Gamsjäger’s Header Lifts Cardinals Past Bears, 2-1, in Overtime

Cardinals scored the game winner with only 10 players

CONWAY, Ark. – With 52 seconds remaining in the first overtime and the score tied 1-1, Marjan Gamsjäger headed a centering ball from Joe Brown to lift The University of the Incarnate Word men's soccer team past Central Arkansas, 2-1, in overtime Sunday afternoon from Bill Stephens Soccer Complex.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The match was scoreless at halftime. The Bears (0-2-0) drew first blood in the 56th minute as Niklas Brodacki scored on a penalty kick.

Eight minutes later, the Cardinals (1-1-0) knotted the match as Roberto Diaz Fernandez took a pass from Robert Pratt to beat ORU goalkeeper, Rasmus Jonsson, from 12 yards out.

Shots were nearly even through the end of regulation, with UIW holding a 15-14 advantage. Both teams had quality scoring chances in the waning minutes. Trinidad Luna sent a corner kick into the box where Gamsjäger's header attempt went wide. Seconds later, Brendan Brown made a strong save on UCA's Donald Benamna.

Seven minutes into the overtime period, Kas Van Eekelen was issued with a red card, making the Cardinals play the rest of the match down one man. That didn't stop UIW, as Brown and Gamjaeger's heroics came three minutes later.

UIW outshot UCA, 4-1, in the extra session en route to leading the shot category in the match, 19-15.  UCA held a 7-5 advantage in corner kicks.

LEADERS

Gamsjäger and Fernandez each came away with two points on their tallies, while Brown and Robert Pratt registered an assist each. Brown (1-1-0) made six saves for the win in goal for the Cardinals.

Brodacki registered the only points for the Bears. Jonsson took the loss in goal with two saves.

Due to Van Eekelen's red card, he is ineligible to play next Friday's game against Cornell.

UP NEXT

UIW plays Cornell on Friday, Sept. 1 at 5 p.m. on the first day of the SMU Tournament.

STAY TUNED
