SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team fell behind at the outset on Tuesday night and cross-town rival UTSA never relented, handing the Cardinals a 16-0 defeat at Roadrunner Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Roadrunners (18-17, 7-8 C-USA) did most of their damage early, jumping out to a 14-0 advantage after only three innings. The Cardinals (16-21, 5-10 SLC) were held to just four hits on the night, while UTSA piled on 17.
UIW was only able to place runners in scoring position three times over the course of the game. The Cardinals' best scoring opportunity came in the ninth after
David Anaya notched a single up the middle and
Kyle Bergeron subsequently walked, but the Roadrunner's turned a double play and forced a fly out to seal the victory.
LEADERS
Anaya led the UIW offense with a 2-for-3 night and a walk. Bergeron went 1-for-3 with a walk and
Lee Thomas finished 1-for-4.
Ben Brookover paced UTSA with a perfect 3-for-3 outing, four RBIs, three runs scored, two walks and a double.
Luke Taggart (1-4) took the loss, surrendering five earned runs on four hits with three walks in 0.2 innings.
Steven Dressler (2-3) picked up the win, allowing just two hits with three strikeouts through 5.0 scoreless innings of work.
