SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball scored 10 runs on 15 hits, but was outlasted 15-10 by Central Arkansas in game one of the Southland Conference series on Friday night at Sullivan Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Cardinals (11-8, 2-2 SLC) jumped out ahead with a four-run second inning, but the Bears (7-11, 1-2 SLC) responded with seven of their own in the next half frame.
The four-run inning was capped by a two-run double off the wall by
Kyle Bergeron.
Eddy Gonzalez started the rally with an RBI single, and
David Anaya followed with one of his three RBI on the evening.
The Cardinals cut the lead down to 8-6 in the fourth when Anaya drove in another run on a single, and Bergeron hit his second double of the game to drive in another run.
The Bears then put up a seven spot on the board and would put the game away.
The Cardinal bullpen kept the Bears off the board in the last three innings, but it wasn't enough.
Luke Taggart and
Nolan Ellis combined to toss the three scoreless innings, without allowing a hit.
Then in the ninth, the Cardinals tried to mount a comeback, scoring three runs in the bottom of the inning, but it would be cut short to end the game 15-10.
Tyler Lesley got tabbed with the loss and is now 0-2 on the year, while Brandon Hagerla picked up the win and moved to 2-3.
LEADERS
Seven of the nine Cardinal starters collected at least a hit.
Mark Whitehead had a season-high four hits and scored three runs. Anaya and Bergeron each collected three hits and three RBI.
For UCA, Keaton Presley hit a grandslam in the sixth inning to lead the Bears' offense with 4 RBI. Hunter Strong and William Hancock had three hits each.
