Cardinals Battle, Drop 12-5 Game Against No. 15 Texas A&M

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team battled and grabbed early leads against No. 15 Texas A&M, but the Aggies stormed back to take a 12-5 victory at Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park Wednesday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Playing in front of over 4,000 spectators, the Cardinals (5-5) jumped out to a 2-0 lead when Kyle Bergeron singled in two runs in the first inning. The Aggies (8-1) came right back in the bottom half of the inning with a pair of runs of their own to tie it at 2. Then in the second inning, with runners on second and third and one out, Ryan Gonzalez hit an RBI-groundout to give UIW a 3-2 lead. But the lead wouldn't last long.

The Aggies, who are averaging over 10 runs per game, did what they do best: score runs. They went on to score in every inning except for two, including a 5-spot in the sixth inning. The bullpen also kept the Cardinals off the board for the remainder of the game, until the ninth inning.

With the bases loaded in the ninth, David Anaya and Eddy Gonzalez each collected an RBI, cutting the lead to 12-5. But then Texas A&M's Cason Sherrod struck out the next two batters to end the game.

Luke Taggart got tabbed with the loss after allowing four runs in 3.0 innings of work, while striking out two, and Lee May Gonzalez earned the win after tossing 4.0 scoreless inning, only allowing a hit and striking out six Cardinals.

LEADERS

Tanner White was the only Cardinal with two hits and also scored a run. Bergeron had a hit and an RBI, while Ryan Gonzalez collected a hit, an RBI and a run scored. Mark Whitehead had a hit, a run and a stolen base.

For the Aggies, Joel Davis had himself a night. He finished the game 4-for-4, a homerun, five RBI and three runs scored. Cole Bedford also had a four-hit night and scored twice. Braden Shewmake had two hits, three RBI, and scored two runs.
