Men’s Basketball Looks to Feast on Lions Wednesday

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Prior to partaking in the traditional turkey and stuffing, the University of the Incarnate Word men's basketball looks to feast upon Lions – the Loyola Marymount Lions, that is – when the Cardinals welcome the West Coast Conference foe Wednesday, Nov. 22 at 7 p.m. from the McDermott Center.
 
FIRST TIP
 
Wednesday features only the second meeting between UIW and LMU, and the first time the Los Angeles-based school has come to Broadway. The Lions squeaked by in overtime, 91-90, on Dec. 16, 2016 in LA.

Summary: LMU won its second-straight game following a hard-fought 92-86 overtime win at home over Southland Conference foe, McNeese, last Sunday. Eli Scott posted a double-double of 14 points and 11 rebounds, while Cameron Allen came off the bench to score a team-high 19 points.
 
On the season, James Batemon leads the Lions in points (16.7), assists (11), and steals (7). Scott is second with 15.3 points per game, while his 7.7 rebounds per contest leads the team. Batemon's 16.7 points per game ranks him fifth in the West Coast Conference, while he joins Jeffery McClendon in a share for second in the conference with 2.3 steals per game.

Summary: UIW has started 3-0 for the first time since the 2014-15 Cardinals began the season 5-0. The Cardinals' last victory was an 88-49 victory over McMurry last Friday, which saw UIW score the game's first 17 points. Junior Charles Brown III and senior Shawn Johnson finished with 19 points apiece to lead four Cardinals in double figures. Redshirt-freshman Christian Peevy came off the bench to score 15 points on 6-of-7 shooting. Freshman Augustine Ene went a perfect 5-for-5 from the floor in his first collegiate start, en route to 11 points. The Cardinals shot a season-high 52 percent from the floor in the game.
 
On the season, UIW leads the Southland Conference in four categories: scoring margin (+30.3), field goal percentage defense (33.2), blocks per game (9.3), and turnover margin (+10.3). UIW is third in the nation in blocked shots, trailing only Louisville and Michigan State. The Cardinals are also 9th in steals per game (11.3). Brown III (16.7) and junior Simi Socks (15.0) are 11th and 15th, respectively in the conference in points per game. Senior Devin Wyatt is second in the SLC with 2.0 blocks per game, while Johnson is tops with 4.0 steals per contest and sixth with 7.7 rebounds per game.

UIW hits the road for the first time this season, when the Cardinals head east on I-10 to face Houston on Saturday, Nov. 25 at 7 p.m.
