Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Cardinals Shutout Colonels in Physical Southland Battle, 3-0

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – In a game that had been postponed from Sunday due to lightning, the University of the Incarnate Word women's soccer team defeated Nicholls State University, 3-0, on Monday afternoon at Benson Stadium.
 
HOW IT WAS WON
 
The Cardinals (3-5-1, 2-1 SLC) appeared to have found their grove against the Colonels (3-4-1, 0-2-1 SLC), taking 17 shots compared to only seven by Nicholls.
 
UIW's found the net in the 49th minute when Brooke Hanson passed the ball from left to right and found Ana Campa, who headed it in for her first goal of the season.
 
The Cardinals' second goal came off of a pass by Karey Tylman from the 35 yard line to Hanson, who fired a shot into the right top corner of the net.
 
The final goal of the afternoon came off of a series of passes as Sam Batley hit Ana Rodriguez who found Sabrina Martineau for the goal past a diving Colonel goalie.
 
Emily Halal and Heather McKinney of UIW and Jess Coates of Nicholls were each issued yellow cards in a physical second period.
 
LEADERS
 
Hanson led the Cardinals with an assist and a goal. Martineau and Camps each scored their first goal of the year, while Tylman, Batley and Martineau each contributed an assist.
 
Hannah Savoie paced the Colonels with two shots.
 
GOALKEEPER DECISIONS
 
UIW goalkeeper Haley Nelson (2-0) earned the win, facing seven shots and recording two saves.
 
Nicholls goalkeeper Roosa Hurmerinta (2-4) took the loss, surrendering three goals on 17 shots.
 
UP NEXT
 
Winners of consecutive games, the Cardinals will travel to Conway, Ark. this Friday to take on a Central Arkansas (8-3-0, 3-0-0 SLC) squad that is ranked second in the Southland Conference. On Sunday UIW will play Northwestern State in Natchitoches, LA. The Demons currently sit at 4th in the league.
 
STAY TUNED
 
Following the weekend's action, the Cardinals will host three games in a row, beginning Oct. 7 against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. UIW will play McNeese on Oct. 14 and Lamar on Oct. 16 at Benson Stadium
