SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS - After a rough start to the 2016 season, the University of the Incarnate Word women's soccer team earned their first win of the season over Prairie View A&M on Sunday afternoon with a 5-0 finish at Benson Stadium.

The Cardinals (1-4-1) played a stellar game against the Panthers (0-4), taking a total of 26 shots and making 11 on goal. Â The panthers took only seven shots throughout the game and three were on goal, all of which were stopped by goalkeepers
Sydney Huntsinger (New Braunfels/Canyon HS) in the first half and
Haley Nelson (Sioux, IA/Bishop Heelan Catholic) in the second half.

UIW scored their first goal in the first ten minutes of the game and did not look back. Â
Emani Stewart (Victorville, CA/Hesperia HS) scored goal one for the Cardinals from a passed ball across the field from junior
Karey Tylman (San Antonio, Alamo Heights HS). Â

In the 17th minute of the game the Cardinals held their ground when sophomore
Sam Batley passed the ball to
Isabel Gracia (Mesquite, TX, Richland Collegiate HS) for the second goal. Â

Fifteen minutes later
Brooke Hanson (New Braunfels/New Braunfels HS) dribbled past the goalkeeper who had floated out of the goalie box and kicked it in, with the assist by
Alyssa Amaya (San Antonio/Brandeis HS). Â Amaya then scored the 4th goal of the game which was a pass from Niki Poppa (San Antonio, Reagan HS) from over 20 yards away.

The 5th and final goal from the Cardinals came in the middle of the second half when Stewart dribbled down the side of the field, shot, and scored for her team.

The Cardinals will look to keep the flame going after the first win and have until Friday night to prepare for their next game against Houston Baptist.
