FRISCO, TEXAS – The Southland Conference released their annual 2015-16 All-Academic Cross Country and Track & Field teams on Tuesday and eight University of the Incarnate Word student-athletes were on the list.
The men's all-academic team consists of 26 student-athletes including nine automatic selections while the women's squad consists of 29 student-athletes including 18 automatic selections. Sam Houston State led the league with a combined 14 student-athletes appearing on the all-academic teams, while Abilene Christian collected nine total honorees. Stephen F. Austin and UIW each earned eight spots on the two teams followed by McNeese with seven and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi with six.
There were a total of 10 student-athletes earning their third or fourth all-academic citation and two,
Jasmine Waring (San Antonio/Randolph HS) and
Lindsey Frost (Rockport/Gregory-Portland HS), are Cardinals. Waring graduated with a degree in rehabilitation sciences and Frost earned a degree in fashion merchandising in May.
Junior
Jacob Ulbricht (Spring Branch/Smithson Valley HS) was the lone UIW male athlete to make the team while the women earned nearly 25 percent of the total all-academic women's team members. Junior
Myah Antwi (Huntsville/Huntsville HS) and sophomore
Sarea Alexander (San Antonio/MacArthur HS) were both automatic selections based on winning an event at the conference championship meets.
Rainy Castaneda (Laredo/United HS) and
Keila Rodriguez (Brownsville/Rivera HS) each made the team for the first time while
Gabrielle Estrada (Boerne/FEAST) nabbed her second all-academic selection.
All-academic members earned at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale through the semester prior to the sports' championship season, completed at least one full academic year at his or her institution prior to this season and participated in at least 50 percent of the school's meets.
