Rain Washes Out U.S. Open

OAKMONT, PENNSYLVANIA – Austin Jordan will have to wait one more day to play in his first U.S. Open Men's Golf Championship thanks to a torrential downpour that washed away all of the afternoon tee times at fabled Oakmont Country Club on Thursday.

On a day that featured a number of stoppages, play was halted at 3:51 p.m. local time and officially suspended for the day at 4:34 p.m.  Prior to the final stoppage, play had already been suspended nearly three hours throughout the morning and early afternoon.  Jordan, a University of the Incarnate Word graduate, was originally scheduled to tee off at 2:42 p.m. EST.  Andrew Landry is the early leader at 3-under par through 17 holes while amateur Scottie Scheffler posted the lowest official round at 1-under par, but is one of only nine players to finish their round.

Jordan was unperturbed by his inability to get on the course.  "I could tell by the forecast that I probably wasn't going to get to play," he said.

Jordan was happy that he did not have to deal with all the starting and stopping that most players went through on Thursday.  He also mentioned that he has enjoyed meeting the players and being in the locker room, but that he is really looking forward to getting to play and competing.  When asked about the golf course, one he has played three times this week, he gave a succinct answer that his friends and family would expect, "It's difficult."

Later on, Jordan went into a little more depth about the course and how he needs to play.  He mentioned that tee shots would be important for him because missing the fairway almost guarantees a bogey or worse.  One of the interesting elements of the course that he talked about was the difficulty of the bunkers because the lips are deceivingly high.  One of his final decisions heading into the tournament was to take his 3-wood out of the bag because he planned on using his hybrid and 2-iron in the majority of situations.

Two final tidbits of information about Jordan as he prepares to play in the U.S. Open is that Friday will be his 23rd birthday and that his caddy is his golf instructor, Amy Fox.  He tees off at 10:12 a.m. with playing partners Tyler Raber and Christopher Crawford.
