EDINBURG, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team will travel to UT Rio Grande Valley for a mid-week non-conference game on Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m.
The Cardinals (7-21) defeated the Vaqueros (11-13) last week at home, 6-5 and will go for the season sweep. They are hitting .228 this season and average 3.1 runs per game.
Brance Kahle (Colleyville/Grapevine Faith HS) has been on a hot streak lately and has raised his batting average to .321. He leads the team with six doubles and 16 runs batted in while only striking out six times in 84 at bats.
Braden Martin (Andrews/Andrews HS) has a .304 batting average and a team high .381 on-base percentage.
Cory Duran (Lewisville/Lewisville HS) had a huge week for the team last week going 6-for-10 at Houston Baptist with three doubles and two RBI's in the series.
Freshman
Austin Preiss (La Vernia/La Vernia HS) is scheduled to make the start on the mound for UIW. He has made 10 appearances and two starts already this year. He has a 5.21 earned run average in 19.0 innings while holding opponents to a .250 batting average.
Lance Moszkowicz (Spring/Klein Collins HS) and
Trevor Hardee (Alvord/Alvord HS) have been the team's top relief pitchers. Moszkowicz is 1-2 with three saves and a 3.14 ERA in 28.2 innings while Hardee is 2-0 with a save and a 3.54 ERA in 20.1 innings. Hardee has limited opponents to a .169 batting average.
The Vaqueros opened up Western Athletic Conference play last week and went 1-2 against New Mexico State. They are hitting .263 as a team and are scoring five runs per game. Jose Garcia and Joseph Collazo are the top hitters on the squad. Garcia is hitting .400 with 19 runs, six doubles, eight stolen bases and 10 RBI's. Collazo has a .368 batting average with 25 runs scored and 13 RBI's. The pitching staff is led by Johnny Gonzalez who has a 4-1 record and a 1.18 ERA in 38.0 innings of work. Robert Quinonez was the team's starter last week in San Antonio. He has a 3.05 ERA in 20.2 innings.
